Montreal's soil is under serious stress. Freeze-thaw cycles, clay-heavy ground, and foot traffic compact the earth over winter, cutting off the oxygen and water your grass roots need. Aeration — the process of pulling small plugs of soil from your lawn — is the single most effective thing you can do to bring a tired lawn back to life.
Best time to aerate in Montreal
The ideal window is late August to mid-September. Your lawn is still actively growing, the ground has warmed all summer, and there's enough growing season left for the grass to fill in the holes before the first frost. Spring aeration (May–June) is a second option but often coincides with weed germination — you can inadvertently help dandelions more than grass.
Signs your lawn needs aeration
- Water puddles on the surface after rain instead of absorbing
- The lawn feels spongy or has a thick thatch layer (over 1 cm)
- Grass looks thin and pale despite regular watering
- Soil feels rock-hard when you push a screwdriver in
- You have heavy clay soil (common in the Montreal area)
What happens during aeration
A core aerator pulls plugs of soil roughly 5–8 cm deep and leaves them on the surface. Those plugs break down naturally within two weeks, returning organic matter to the soil. The channels left behind allow water, fertilizer, and air to reach the root zone directly.
Pair aeration with overseeding and fertilization
Aeration alone is good. Aeration followed immediately by overseeding and a slow-release fall fertilizer is transformative. The seeds fall directly into the channels and establish much faster than seeds scattered on compacted soil. Within two to three seasons, a properly aerated and overseeded lawn is almost unrecognizable.
