If you're designing a Montreal backyard, the patio-vs-deck question comes up early. Both can look stunning and serve your outdoor living needs — but they have very different price points, maintenance demands, and performance in Quebec's climate.
Stone or paver patio
A ground-level paver or natural stone patio is extremely durable in Montreal's climate. Properly installed with the right base depth, it expands and contracts with freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or heaving. Maintenance is minimal — occasional re-sanding of joints and sealing every few years.
- Lifespan: 30–50 years with proper installation
- Maintenance: very low
- Cost: $18–$45/sq ft installed depending on material
- Best for: flat or gently sloped yards, ground-level use
- Permit: generally not required for ground-level patios
Wood or composite deck
A deck gives you flexibility that a ground-level patio can't — you can build over uneven ground, create multi-level spaces, and raise your outdoor living area to match a door height. The tradeoff is maintenance: wood decks need staining or sealing every 2–3 years, and even pressure-treated lumber has a lifespan of 15–20 years in Montreal's conditions.
- Lifespan: 15–25 years (wood) or 25–30+ years (composite)
- Maintenance: moderate (wood) to low (composite)
- Cost: $35–$65/sq ft installed for composite; less for pressure-treated
- Best for: elevated access from doors, uneven terrain, multi-level layouts
- Permit: usually required in Montreal for decks over 60 cm height
Our recommendation for most Montreal backyards
For a flat backyard used mainly for lounging and dining, a paver patio is almost always the better long-term value. For a sloped yard or a house where the back door opens 60+ cm above grade, a deck (ideally composite) makes more sense. Many properties benefit from a combination: a composite deck off the back door stepping down to a paver patio.
L'Île Verte builds both — stone and paver patios, composite and wood decks, and combination layouts. We design and build across Montreal, Laval, West Island, and the South and North Shores.
