Landscape lighting in Montreal: how to extend your outdoor season
· 4 min read
Montreal's outdoor season is short — roughly May to October. Good landscape lighting lets you use your yard and patio well into the evening, effectively extending that window. It also improves security and dramatically improves curb appeal after dark. Here's what to consider.
Types of landscape lighting
- Path lights — low-voltage lights along walkways and driveways for safety and definition
- Spotlights — uplighting for trees, architectural features, or focal plants
- Step lights — recessed or surface-mounted lights on deck or patio steps
- String lights — warm overhead lighting for patios and pergolas
- In-ground well lights — flush-mounted, great for driveways and feature trees
- Wall-mounted sconces — at garage doors, entryways, and fences
LED vs. low-voltage systems
Almost all modern landscape lighting is LED — the energy savings are significant and lifespan is 15–25 years. Low-voltage 12V systems are the standard for path lights and spotlights; they're safe to install in garden beds and use a transformer plugged into a standard outdoor outlet. For step and wall lights, line-voltage systems wired to your panel give more flexibility but require an electrician.
What works in Montreal's winters
Not all fixtures are rated for our temperatures. Look for fixtures rated to at least -40°C and IP65 or higher (fully weatherproof). Cheap imported fixtures often fail after the first hard frost. Brass and copper fixtures last the longest in Quebec conditions; quality aluminum is also reliable.
Smart lighting and timers
A simple timer or dusk-to-dawn photocell is the minimum. Smart landscape lighting systems (Lutron, Kichler, VOLT) let you control zones from your phone, set seasonal schedules, and dim lights later in the night — useful when you don't want your yard blazing at 2 a.m.
